Cho Sumi(Sumi Jo)'s secret to success: Graduating from 5 years of school in 2 years with her first love in her 20s.

 

Cho Soo Mi revealed that her first boyfriend cheated on her with a friend when she was 20 years old.

 

On the May 26 broadcast of tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," singer Cho Sumi appeared... While listening to it...I felt once again that opposites attract. Just as we grow through competition....know evil to know good...

 

 

In this broadcast, Cho said, "In '83, I went to Italy to study abroad. There was really nothing... There was no internet, no computer. To hear my mother's voice once, I took an hour bus ride and looked at the clock while talking on the phone. I only talked to her for one minute," he said, recalling his time abroad when he could only talk to his mother for one minute because of the phone bill. 

When Yoo seok asked, "If you studied in Italy in '83, you could afford it, and it wasn't the time when overseas travel was liberalized," Cho Sumi replied.

"I was admitted to Seoul National University as a senior. As soon as I got in, I had a very serious relationship." She didn't study

"There was a graduation quota system. There was a graduation quota system. I got in first in my class, but the next year I got 52nd."

"I didn't go to class, so I got kicked out. The professors and parents were disappointed. "I left my boyfriend behind and went home alone in tears."

 

 

Jo was born Jo Su-gyeong in Changwon, South Korea. Her mother was an amateur singer and pianist who had been unable to pursue her own professional music studies because of politics in Korea during the 1950s. Determined to provide her daughter with opportunities she never had, Jo's mother enrolled her in piano lessons at the age of 4 and later voice lessons at the age of 6. Although Jo's family lived in a rented property, her parents bought a piano for her to play.[4] Her mother raised and trained Jo strictly. Jo recalled even when her mother went out, she locked the door outside so that Jo could not play truant.[5] As a child, Jo would often spend up to eight hours a day studying music.[6]

In 1976, Jo entered the Sun Hwa Arts School from which she graduated in 1980, receiving dual diplomas in voice and piano.[7] She entered the department of vocal music at the Seoul National University (SNU) with the best practical score since the department had opened.[8] There she continued her music studies from 1981 to 1983. While studying at SNU, Jo made her professional recital debut, appeared in several concerts with the Korean Broadcasting System, and made her professional operatic debut as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro with Seoul Opera.[2]

In 1983, Jo left SNU in order to study at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome. Among her teachers were Carlo Bergonzi and Giannella Borelli. While Jo studied in Italy, she was frequently heard in concert in Italian cities and on national radio broadcasts and telecasts. It was during this time when Jo began to use "Sumi" as her stage name in order to make her name more friendly to European language speakers who often found it difficult to pronounce Su-gyeong. She graduated in 1985 with majors in keyboard and voice.[citation needed]

Following graduation, Jo began to study with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf[6] and won several international competitions in Seoul, Naples, Enna, Barcelona, and Pretoria. In August 1986, she was unanimously awarded first prize in the Carlo Alberto Cappelli International Competition in Verona, one of the world's most important contests, open only to first-prize winners of other major competitions.

이날 방송에서 조수미는 “83년도에 이탈리아에 유학을 갔다. 정말 아무것도 없었다고 합니다.. 인터넷, 컴퓨터도 없었다. 어머니 목소리 한 번 들으려면 한 시간 버스 타고 가서 전화 통화를 하면서 시계를 봤다. 1분만 통화를 했다”며 전화 요금 때문에 모친과 통화도 1분만 가능했던 유학시절을 회상했다 합니다. 

 

유재석이 “83년도 이탈리아 유학이면 경제적으로 여유가 있었던 거 아니냐. 해외여행 자유화가 된 시기도 아니고”라고 묻자 조수미는

 

“서울대 수석 입학했다네요. 들어가자마자 연애를 너무 진하게 했다." 공부를 안 했다.고 합니다.

 

"졸업정원제라는 게 있었다. 52명 뽑아서 성적순으로 잘랐다. 1등 수석으로 들어갔는데 다음 해에 52등을 했다."

 

"수업을 안 들어갔다. 그래서 쫓겨났다. 교수님들 부모님들이 아쉬운 거다. "남자친구를 두고 혼자 눈물을 머금고 가게 된 거다”고 답했습니다. 

 

조수미는 “그 때 아버님이 저한테 주신 돈이 딱 300불이었다. 큰돈 같아도 작은 돈이었다. 집안이 경제적으로 여유 있는 집안은 아니기 때문에. 3개월, 6개월 공부하고 빨리 오려고 했다. 남자친구도 기다리고 있고 노래 해봐야 뭐하나 했는데 3개월 후에 남자친구 편지가 왔다. 헤어지자. 그 때 눈물 머금고 결심했다. 내가 누군가가 돼서 돌아가겠다. 그래서 열심히 했다”고 말했습니다.
