Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 will be released tomorrow, but in fact, there has been no drama that has satisfied my dark desires as much as Kingdom, so if time allows, I plan to start binge-watching it one after another starting this evening.

 

 

 

Kingdom, which attracted great attention as writer Eunhee Kim's first OTT work, was a work worthy of being called a great work that made the imaginary story of the Joseon Dynasty and zombies a reality.

In particular, in helping Netflix, which first landed in Korea, establish a stable foundation, this drama left an unprecedented history until Squid Game came out.
To be honest, due to the nature of genres featuring zombies, scary objects, or creatures, they often rely on one element. That's why so many B-grade horror genres are coming out, because if there's a lot of brutality, there are cases where it can be saved to some extent even if the story is weak.

It is also true that Kingdom initially focused on the fear expressed by the cruelty and blood traces of Joseon Dynasty zombies, whose names were unfamiliar.

However, the fundamental cause of the creation of zombies and the conflict and sharp confrontation between the forces trying to exploit their respective interests caused considerable tension and concentration in appreciating the work.
The flow of the narrative depicted by the deviant human desires and the loyal and extremely ordinary characters who tried to correct them formed a fairly dense and thick film.

Looking back, I think that the apocalypse genre content we have seen so far is the most Korean and Oriental version of the emergence of a virus and new conflicts in society, which were only formally adhered to.

The shock I received while watching Kingdom was more due to the freshness than the fear. Unlike past horror content where everything was thought to be complete by putting on armor and revealing sharp teeth and claws, Kingdom did a great job of expressing the newly infected ego that blooms in the character in great detail.

The dramatic development of special makeup and CG technology at the time allowed people to experience for themselves the new market for Korean dramas that would lead the promotion of new culture.

I would like to evaluate that the traditional costumes, houses, and zombies strangely intertwined were successful.

​It's a bit difficult to call a specific actor, but at the time, people even evaluated the acting skills of some actors by saying that they 'detracted from the quality of the work.' At the time, I agreed with what he said to a certain extent, but when I thought about it, I wondered, 'Was it really necessary to criticize it that much?'

Putting aside some of the mixed reviews, if you evaluate the overall acting skills of the actors, it is clear that you were exposed to truly top-notch acting at the time. Ryu Seung-ryong and Heo Jun-ho added weight, and Bae Doo-na and Ju Ji-hoon provided the driving force that drove the story, and I think they balanced the work well.

As Kingdom Asinjeon, in which Jeon Ji-hyun appeared, ended in failure, the momentum to continue the next season was lost, and people naturally lowered their expectations for Season 3. A new spin-off with a change in the main character seems difficult, and it would be nice to somehow lead Season 3 in a new direction, but there is no way to know writer Kim Eun-hee's thoughts, so it is hard to predict anything.

And recently, with the news that a new drama about the story of a female scientist is being written, it is predicted that it will be difficult to revive the Kingdom series.

​

Still, as a fan who liked Kingdom, I have a small glimmer of hope that someday they will present a new work to the public again with Season 3.
​

It was a shame that Ryu Seung-ryong and Heo Jun-ho, who were like that in the past and still show their own acting philosophies through their unique eyes and voices, met their premature deaths in the play.
